The Murder Mystery Event is a multi agency community event aimed at keeping young people entertained and amused during the school holidays. The concept is for the children and young people to form teams in order to follow a series of clues (laid down by the local dramatic society? newspapers and local shop keepers). Over the 4 days a series of bizarre but connected murders occur and there are prizes given for solving the crime and identifying the killer. Prizes are provided by grant and also gifts from local businesses.
The event has a number of 'value added' benefits in the involvement of the local police, fire service, military, youth teams and community groups which allows the young people to meet and interact with authority groups in a friendly and supportive environment. The scenarios can also carry a number of key messages such as stranger danger, crime does not pay etc. thereby providing learning opportunities for the young people. Additionally, young people at risk of offending can be brought into a more socially responsible role and local residents can see young people in their proper light and not as a nuisance to be feared.
